Pipe Bursting in Livermore, CA
Pipe bursting replaces a failing sewer line without trenching the whole yard. A bursting head fractures the old pipe underground while a seamless new HDPE pipe is pulled in behind it — leaving your landscaping, driveway, and patio largely intact, with only two small access pits. The Otter Squad cameras the line first to confirm bursting is the right method for your pipe, then gives you a firm written bid before anyone digs. We are a family-owned, union contractor licensed C-36 and C-42 under CSLB #1053855. Clear Lines or You Don't Pay a Dime.
The Otter Squad Guarantee
Clear Lines or You Don't Pay a Dime. If we can't clear your blocked line using our standard drain clearing procedure, you don't pay for the attempt.
Why Pipe Bursting?
- New seamless HDPE pipe — no joints for roots to enter
- Minimal excavation preserves landscaping & hardscape
- 50+ year design life, corrosion- and root-resistant
- Often faster than full open-trench replacement
- Camera-verified before and after
- Permit pulled for your address
When Pipe Bursting Is the Right Method
Bursting is not the only trenchless option, and it is not always the right one. The camera decides. These are the situations where it usually wins.
- The line is collapsed, badly deformed, or too far gone to line — but still follows a clear, traceable path.
- The sewer run goes under a driveway, patio, or landscaping you do not want to trench.
- The old pipe is clay or cast iron with widespread defects that make a spot repair a waste of money.
- You want a brand-new pipe rather than a liner inside the old one.
How Pipe Bursting Works
The idea is simple: fracture the old pipe in place and pull a new one through behind it. The execution is where experience shows.
We dig two small access pits — one at each end of the section — and feed a steel bursting head through the old line. A hydraulic ram pulls the head forward, fracturing the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil, while a new seamless HDPE pipe is dragged in behind it. The new pipe follows the same path as the old one, with no joints for roots to enter and a typical design life of 50+ years. Because there is no continuous trench, the landscaping, driveway, and hardscape between the two pits stay intact. Our pipe bursting vs. pipe lining guide walks through when each method wins.
How a Pipe Bursting Job Runs
Every burst runs in the same order, and no number is committed before the camera has been down the line.
- 1
Camera inspection.
We confirm the line is a candidate for bursting — collapsed or deformed but still traceable — and map the depth, length, and any bends.
- 2
Firm written bid
before any work starts, for the full scope, with no add-ons mid-job.
- 3
Permits.
Sewer replacement needs a city or district plumbing permit. We pull it for your address.
- 4
Access pits and burst.
We dig two small pits, feed the bursting head, and pull the new seamless HDPE line through — no continuous trench.
- 5
Final camera confirmation
so you see the finished line clear end to end, plus the required jurisdiction inspection under the permit.
What Affects the Cost of Pipe Bursting
Pipe bursting is bid per job. What we promise is a free assessment, a camera-verified diagnosis, and one firm written bid before any work begins. These are the factors that move the number.
- •Length of the run being replaced.
- •Depth of the existing pipe, since deeper lines mean larger access pits.
- •Pipe diameter and how many bends and junctions the run has.
- •Number and location of access points, and whether an existing cleanout can be reused.
- •Permit and inspection fees for the governing city or district.
- •Restoration cost avoided — preserving a driveway or patio is what bursting saves you.

I am Alfredo Ortiz, and I have spent more than 30 years in sewer and drain lines. The Otter Squad is my family's company, Latino-owned, licensed under CSLB #1053855 for C-36 plumbing and C-42 sanitation, and staffed by union, UA-trained crews. Pipe bursting is a tool I reach for when the line is too far gone to line but still traceable — and the camera tells me that before I recommend it. If lining solves it, I will say so.
