Pipe Bursting vs. Pipe Lining: Which Trenchless Fix Does Your Sewer Line Need?
By The Otter Squad·Published 2026-09

Both pipe bursting and CIPP lining fix a sewer line without trenching the whole yard. But they do different things, and choosing the wrong one wastes money. Here is the difference.
Choose Pipe Bursting When…
- The line is collapsed or badly deformed
- You want an entirely new pipe with no joints for roots to enter
- The old pipe is too damaged to line (lining needs a mostly-round pipe)
Bursting fractures the old pipe and pulls a new seamless HDPE pipe through — best for lines that are structurally failed. See pipe bursting.
Choose CIPP Lining When…
- The pipe is cracked or root-invaded but still mostly round
- There are widespread defects along a line you do not want to excavate
- You want to seal infiltration without replacing the whole pipe
Lining installs a new structural liner inside the existing pipe — best for lines that are damaged but still structurally round. See CIPP pipe lining.
How We Decide
We do not pick a method on a hunch. A camera inspection shows the pipe's actual condition — round, deformed, collapsed, or cracked — and that footage tells us which method fits, with honest upfront pricing for both.
