Multiple Drains Clogging at Once? It Is Usually the Main Line
By The Otter Squad·Published 2026-09

One slow drain is a fixture problem. Two or more drains backing up at the same time is a different animal — it almost always means the blockage is in the main sewer line, where every drain in the house converges.
How to Tell It Is the Main Line
- Multiple fixtures back up at once — sinks, tubs, and a toilet together
- The lowest drains in the home (a basement or ground-floor bathroom) are the worst
- Running water in one fixture causes gurgling or a backup in another
- A sewage smell near a cleanout or outside over the lateral
When all the branch lines feed into a single blocked main, clearing one fixture does nothing — the water just backs up somewhere else.
What to Do
- Stop running water to avoid making the backup worse — this can be an emergency.
- We clear the main line to restore flow, then camera it to find the cause.
- If it is buildup, hydro jetting cleans the whole line. If it is structural — roots, a crack, a collapse — we give you repair options.
The point of clearing is not just to unblock the line once. It is to find out why it blocked, so you are not calling us back in three weeks. Start with drain cleaning.
